Sermon Outline

Oh the places you will go

·        Phone call from Becca's school

o       Journey

§         Running around the house in a panic

§         Getting dressed because I was sick in bed and thinking this is the outfit I will be wearing for the next three days

§         Trying to remember what was to go into the bag for Becca's stay in the hospital - grabbed underwear, shirt, boxers and baby bag

§         Ran outside to get into the car - but it was gone

§         Ran to three neighbors houses to see if someone would give me a ride

§         Took the scooter down Palmer going 65 mph which is a feat in and of itself

§         Took a wrong turn and ended up at 290.

§         Made yet another wrong turn and ended up on some country road and found a church - Methodist - what are you gonna do

§         Banged on doors to get directions because I didn't want to get onto 290 again if! back tracked. Finally a woman emerged from a parsonage and gave me directions

§         I was so close

§         Got Becca, stored my scooter in the counselors office of her school

§         Took her to the car

§         Drove her to the hospital in a daze and scare of reality

§         Went into the waiting room

§         As you can tell from my wife that it was a false alarm

§         If anything, from this experience, we are now ready for the trip to the hospital with bags packed.

·        Oh the places he will go

o       In the Gospel of Mark we see from the beginning a very important aspect about Jesus Christ - He is destined for great and mighty things

§         BAPTISM:

o       In the first chapter of the Gospel John the Baptist prepares the way for this great man, this Son of God who will baptize with fire.

o       Immediately Jesus is on the scene and is emerged into the baptismal waters only to come out seeing the heavens open up and a voice affirming him - you are my son, my beloved, with you I am well pleased.

o        OH THE Places he will go ....

§         AMAZING FEATS

o       As we see Jesus progress throughout the gospel of Mark we see many great deeds

o       A woman is heal just by touching his cloak

o       Bread is broken and multiplied to feed thousands

o       Jesus walks on Water

o       Gives sight to a blind man

o       He is transfigured, becoming dazzling white and the voice returns for all to hear "This is my Son the Beloved, listen to him"

o       OH THE places he will go

§         PREDICTIONS

o       Jesus gathers his disciples together on three different occasions to tell them about his death and resurrection

o       He tells them how he will die. The Son of Man will be handed over.. . condemned to death ... handed over to the gentiles ... mocked ... spit on ... flogged ... killed.

o       OH THE PLACES he will go

·     TODAY'S GOSPEL LESSON

o       Jesus is brought in front of Pilate and we hear the title King of the Jews repeated over and over again

o       Jesus is accused as "King of the Jews" and with his silent reply, Pilate is amazed

o       Jesus is rejected as King of the Jews as the crowd chooses Barabbas over Jesus. They yell out Crucify, Crucify! he is flogged and handed over to be crucified

o       OH THE places he will go Jesus is mocked as King of the Jews by the soldiers. They place a crown of thorns on his head, placed purple cloths, the color of royalty, on him and mocked him. Leading him to his crucifixion

o       He is placed on the cross and the inscription read King of the Jews. Jesus Christ crucified King of the Jews. As he slowly dies people continue to mock him

o       In his last breath he cries out

o       A Centurion gives an ironic statement "Truly this man was God's son!"

o       OH THE places he will go

·        Oh the places we will go

o       Where are we in this story

o       We are the crowd screaming Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord

o       We are the disciples who cannot fully understand Jesus’ predictions and teachings

o       We are Pilate

o       We are Judas

o       OH THE places we will GO.

o       We are the crowd screaming Crucify, Crucify

o       We are the thieves next to Jesus on the Cross

o       We are the ironic Centurion

o       We are the mocking soldiers

o       We WE are the children of God

o       OH THE places we will GO.

o       What have we learned from the King of the Jews

o       Do we suffer as Jesus suffered

o       Do we tell this story

o       Do we live this story out

o       OH THE places we will GO.
